The
latest craze in Bahau is fishing in artificial lakes. On last count, there
are no less than five artificial lakes scattered around the outskirt of
town. Some 1,000 fishing enthusiasts congregate at the lakes every week.
They either engaged in fishing or enter the competitions organized by the
vendors. The
sizes of these lakes are ranging from 30 by 50 meters to 50 by 100 meters,
with an average depth of 2.5 to 4 meters. The
average entrance fees are about RM20 per. 3 hours. An average of 30 persons
spending 3 hours per. day will give an income of about RM16,800 per. week. Little wonder, a few more companies
are jumping into the bandwagon. Artificial lakes are mushrooming. Thirty years ago,
such a business virtually
unheard of in
town. The pollution caused by massive development have a profound effect on
the ecology on nature. The myriad varieties of fish once found in the rivers and
ponds are gone. Fishing enthusiasts have to resort to fishing in these
artificial lakes in order to indulge in this hobby. Progress comes
with a price.
