Malaysia is entering the monsoon season.Just when everyone has got accustomed to the torrid scorching sun, the monsoon season stormed in with great fury. Such is the stark contrast between the two seasons. At one stage, one could almost fried an egg on the road under the mid-day sun, now, thanks to the rain, the water in the once knee-deep rivers threatened to burst their riverbanks. The torrential downpour however, has exposed many weaknesses in the drainage system. A 30-minute rain could easily lead to flash floods in many areas. Whether it is an act of the unscrupulous housing developers or the effect of over-logging remains to be seen. However, it has cause much inconveniences and damages. Fortunately, the flood has not claimed any life yet. It is ironic to see that while the ancient Indians have introduced some excellent drainage system, we in this space-age are still so vulnerable when faced with the onslaught of natural disasters. It is the fervent hope of the people that some concrete solutions could be implemented to curb the occurrence of flash floods.
It may be interesting to watch the parade put up by the colorful umbrellas bopping up and down the streets but the rain is definitely not welcomed by rubber tappers who could not tap on rainy days. This means that they would be derived of their daily source of sustenance. To add to the whole dampening effect, the price of latex has hit an all time low. To supplement their incomes these rubber tappers have to seek part time jobs elsewhere.
