A traditional Minangkabau houseThe residents of Bahau comprised of three major races. The Malays, Chinese and Indians. Traditionally, the Malays live in villages which cluster around the town, while the Indians largely reside in plantation estates. The Chinese mainly live in the town itself and some housing estates located in the vicinity of the town. With the potpourri of these three rich cultures and customs, the celebrations of Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Christmas is of extra significance. The "Open House" concept is the Malaysian way of celebrating the annual events in a harmonious and joyous way. People from all walks of life, regardless of race, religion and creed are welcomed to visit any house. In other words, everyone is a guest and every house owner is a host for the occasion. Such a unique practice helps to foster much goodwill, understanding and mutual respect amongst the different ethnic groups.
