Rivers
play a vital role in transportation. Many places of the world still rely
heavily on rivers as a means of transportation. Sungai Pertemuan is blessed
with two rivers, Muar and Jempol River. It is the place where the two
rivers united. Given its strategic geographical nature, it became
the route for merchants from the east coast and Siam heading to Malacca. Just
about 500 meters away from Sungai Pertemuan, lays another river, Serting
River. There is a lane, which was used to by the merchants to pull the ships
offshore, from the Muar River into Serting River. From there, they will
proceed and later will meet Pahang River. The Malay called this lane "Jalan
Penarikan", literally, simply means "Pull Route". While it served as a hub of transportation in ancient time, it is
also the witness on the derivation of the name “Jempol”. History revealed
that there were nine families originated from Pasai,
Northern Sumatra in search of a better place. Interestingly, the paddy they
grew here produced the highest yield. They were also mesmerized by the charm
of the place. Eventually, they stayed here and named the place, Jempol,
simply means “the best and the beautiful”. The
unification of the two rivers has created an idea place for fishing
enthusiasts. It also has a unique
fable. Legend has it that, Hang Tuah, the revered Malacca hero made use of
the rivers to escape with Tun Teja. They make a stop here, perhaps as a
transit and later proceeded to Pahang. For the details of the story, one
could read the “Legend of Hang Tuah”. As for now, people come here to
fish will definitely stay for a while.
