It is ironic to see
that the progress brought by developments, is causing
much devastations to mankind. According to a report by UN, the amount of
damage inflicted on nature in the last 100 years, is far greater than any of
those since the dawn of human civilization. Jeram Panjang fits aptly into this
perspective. At one time, it is a favoured sport among local tourits.
During weekends and holidays, the place is awashed
with tourists. Unfortunately,
despite the strong protest from the local folks, a rubber factory was setup
near the river. Immediately, the life of the river was threatened and the effect
is most devastating. Due to the indiscriminate dumping of toxic waste into the river, the
once bountiful supply of fish was almost wiped out. Many complaints have
been launched about the skin irritation which manifested after a dip in the water. Much
like the encroachment made by the bushes in the pictures,
the attractions has now turned into distractions. To add insult to injury another factory was established to
manufacture hand gloves. Ironically,
the hand gloves were produced for the health and safety of mankind but in
the process it destroyed Mother Nature. Unless concrete measures are taken to improve the
present situation and reduce the impact of the effluent from the two
factories a
death sentence will loom over the river.
