Pendeta (scholar) Za'ba or Tan Sri Zainal Abidin Bin Ahmad was born at Kg. Bukit Kerdas, Batu Kikir, Negeri Sembilan on 16 September 1895.He had his first formal study at Sekolah Melayu Batu Kikir when he was twelve years old. After that, he was send to Linggi to take his Arabic and al-Quran learning there. He then study at St. Paul Institutions, Seremban and passed his Senior Cambridge exam in 1916. 1 Jun 1916 - He began his career as temporary teachear at the Bukit Zahra English School, Johor Bahru 10 April 1917 - Married Rafeah (Urai) Mohd. Hasban and had one daughter named Raihanah 2 Julai 1917 - Get divorced. Disember 1917 - Married with Fatimah (Che Teh) Umar and had five kids they are Zaharah, Zamrud, Ahmad Murtadza, Mohd. Redha and Zaitun. 3 Oktober 1918 - He had an offered as English and Malay teacher at Malay College, Kuala Kangsar.1920-1921: Took Senior Normal Education Class in Taiping and then had his certificate in teaching. 1 Jun 1923: Started his career as translator and Malay translator at the Department of the Assistant Director of Education for the Faderated Malay State and the State Sattlement. 1 April 1924: Transfered to Sultan Idris Training College (SITC), Tanjong Malim to establish the Translating Department that then become Writing and Composition Department. 1947: He was appointed lecturer of Malay Langguage at the School of Orientel and African Studies in London University. 16 September 1950: Retired 29 September 1952: Started his work as senior lecturer cum Head of Malay Studies Department at the University of Malaya, Singapore until 31st December 1958. 21 September 1956: PENDITA title was awarded to Za'ba. ObjectivesTo acknowledge Za'ba's contributins in the fields of langguange, literature, religion, politics and education as wall as socio-cultural aspects. To commemorate the place of birth of Za'ba as well as a gesture of appreciation by the state government to his kin To set up a tourist attraction which is educational in nature especially for researchers, academicians and students To enable the society to appreciate a prominent public figure by reviewing his personal collection and evidence of his contributions To provide a suitable location to exhibit Za'ba's memoirs and memorabilla apart from those at the National Archive and University Malaya. |
