In an effort to elevate computer literacy, the government working closely with the EPF department has launched a new scheme to enable the public to withdraw money from their EPF accounts for the purchase of computers. The response from the public have been tremendously encouraging. On the very first day, people clamoured the local EPF department seeking information. Application forms were depleted on the very first day itself. It is estimated that more than half of the 6 million members have taken part in the scheme.
Under the scheme, parents who have school-going children above ten years old, are eligible to withdraw up to the maximum of RM3,500. For those members who have children studying in university taking a degree course, their entitlement can reach up to a maximum of RM5,000.
Such measures taken by the government not only has the effect on soaring sales of personal computer and peripherals but to also give a much needed boost to market liquidity. The members are however advised to use the fund prudently because this privilege is only given once.
