Taiso embankmentDespite the fact that it has been maintained and modified numerous times, to date, the embankment that was built to buttress a section of Sornam Hill has not been completed. Whether it was an unforeseen human error or the resistance of the hill to such a project, remains to be seen. However on several occasions, damages were inflicted on it. A downpour will inevitably cause an avalanche of mud and soil. Ironically, its function was supposed to keep off the mud but on the contrary, it collapsed miserably. Many controversies surround this embankment and very diverse opinions were expressed over its failure. Generally, many were of the opinion that the foundation wasn't strong enough as it was constructed during monsoon season. However, the 'fengsui' believers have different opinions altogether. They believed that Sornam Hill which was considered the tail of the dragon was responsible for the prosperity of the town. The landslide was a symbolic of a dying dragon. After the British had destroyed the 'fengsui' of the town, not only have they ended its glorious days, but hadTaiso Hill also wounded and incurred the wrath of the dragon as well. In order to build more houses, many attempts were made by housing developers to level the hill but all their efforts proved futile. On many occasions, the bulldozers were alleged to have malfunctioned inexplicably and work came to a halt. The other unexplainable phenomenon was that many of the drivers have had strange dreams, where the image of a dragon appeared and warned them that they should not proceed with the mutilation of the hill. Strangely enough many were stricken by one form of ailment or another. However, when they ceased their activities their ailment simply vanished. The developers suffered far worse fate. They have to abandon the project midway and bore heavy losses. To many, Sornam Hill is untouchable. Now with the landslide and the unstable embankment, this beliefs had gain stronger ground. However, many people still hope that the embankment could be fortified so as to stop further landslides.
