Despite the fact that the country is heading towards a more industrialized and IT based
economy, the economy of the town is however still very much dependent on
agriculture. The Malays are largely workers in oil palm field and rubber tapers in
the Felda schemes. Many are also employed in the government departments. The
Chinese
are mainly engaged in retail, trade
professionals and technical
services. The Indians on the other hand are found in rubber estates as rubber tapers. However,
some make it through education and became successful
lawyers and doctors. Rubber and oil palm are like the two pillars supporting the economy of the
town. Efforts have been make to diversify the economy. One of the
largest cement factory in the country has been built near Jelai a hamlet
located about 15km to the west. It is a joint venture between a
Korean conglomerate and the state government.
Two light industrial estates have been put up. One in Mahsan and the other just at the outskirt of town. The major activities have been repairing of vehicles and machinery as well as supplying
automobile spare parts. |
