In conjunction with a collaborative project between FRIM and National Institute of Environmental Science (NIES) of Japan, a RM300,000/= Tree-Tower Canopy Walkway System was erected in April 1992. Funded by the Japanese Government, the system consists of three 40m tall free standing towers. The towers are held in place by steel cables and interlinked at a height of 30m by walkways forming a triangle. Each and every station has its own stairway. While the walkways provide convenient access to the canopy for phonological observations and faunal studies, the towers
on the other hand are ideal for microclimatic and physiological
observation. The towers are made of aluminum alloy. Each towers carries an efficient lightning conductor. Due to its compactness and lightweight nature, it only took ten days to
install. The tree tower canopy is believed to be the first of its kind in Malaysia although it has been installed widely in the USA. One of the towers was extended by another 12m
in height to enable measurements of carbon dioxide and fluxes above the tree canopy level.
